Short answer: MIC B12 injections combine three "lipotropic" nutrients (methionine, inositol and choline) with vitamin B12 and are sold for weight loss and energy. Vitamin B12 shots are a proven treatment for B12 deficiency, but research has not shown that MIC or B12 injections cause weight loss or boost energy in people who are not deficient. They are compounded products, not FDA-approved for weight loss.

What is in a MIC B12 shot

Ingredient What it is What the evidence supports
Methionine (M) An essential amino acid Needed for normal metabolism; extra amounts have not been shown to cause weight loss
Inositol (I) A sugar alcohol made by the body and found in food Studied for other conditions; no good evidence for weight loss by injection
Choline (C) A nutrient involved in fat transport in the liver Essential in the diet; no good evidence that injections burn fat
Vitamin B12 Cyanocobalamin or methylcobalamin Treats B12 deficiency; no proven energy or weight benefit if your levels are normal

Clinics set their own formulas, so the amounts of each ingredient vary and are often not listed on the sales page. Some add other ingredients such as L-carnitine or other B vitamins.

What the evidence actually shows

Vitamin B12: the National Institutes of Health's Office of Dietary Supplements says injections are the usual treatment for B12 deficiency, especially in pernicious anemia and conditions that block absorption. It also notes that B12 appears to offer no performance benefit to people who are not deficient. People more likely to run low include older adults, people with pernicious anemia or past stomach or bowel surgery, vegans, and people on long-term metformin or acid-reducing drugs such as omeprazole. A blood test will tell you whether you are one of them.

Lipotropic MIC injections: a medically reviewed Medical News Today overview (updated January 2026) says research has not confirmed that lipotropic injections are safe or effective for weight loss, that human trials are scarce, and that most reported success is anecdotal. The FDA has not approved them for weight loss.

Put simply: a MIC B12 shot may help if you are low in B12, but it is not a fat burner. If weight loss is your goal, GLP-1 medicines such as semaglutide and tirzepatide have large trials behind them; our sister site MyGLP1Reviews compares GLP-1 telehealth providers and prices.

Safety

Vitamin B12 has a low potential for toxicity, and no upper intake limit has been set for it. Pain at the injection site is the most commonly reported problem with MIC shots; other side effects are poorly documented. Because MIC injections are compounded, ask which pharmacy makes them and whether each batch is tested for sterility, and check with a clinician first if you take prescription medicines or have kidney or liver disease.

Bottom line

If a blood test shows low B12, B12 injections are an established treatment, and a MIC blend can be one way to get it. If your B12 is normal, there is no good evidence that MIC B12 shots will help you lose weight or feel more energetic. Spend the money on what the evidence supports.
