Vyleesi and compounded PT-141: how they differ
| Vyleesi (brand) | Compounded PT-141 from a clinic | |
|---|---|---|
| FDA status | Approved June 21, 2019 under NDA 210557 [3] | Not FDA-approved; made by a compounding pharmacy |
| Approved for | Premenopausal women with acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD). Not approved for men [4] | Prescribed at the clinician’s discretion, including off-label |
| Dose | 1.75 mg injected under the skin at least 45 minutes before sex [4] | Set by the prescriber; ask for the dose in milligrams |
| Limits | No more than one dose in 24 hours or eight doses a month [4] | Ask the prescriber to confirm limits in writing |
Bremelanotide isn’t on any of FDA’s 503A bulk-substance category lists [5]. Federal law lets 503A pharmacies compound with a substance that is a component of an FDA-approved drug, and it also bars them from regularly making what are essentially copies of a commercially available drug [6]. Ask the clinic how its product differs from Vyleesi.
